Microbiology

“My motivation for finding new drugs for tuberculosis stems from a general desire to help alleviate suffering from diseases that disproportionately affect the poor and that have been neglected by the very countries that have the resources to make a difference. The success that we had in going from the lab to the clinic in leprosy in the 90s, gave me confidence that we can do the same for TB as these diseases are caused by related bacteria.” Read biosketch

Microbiology/Molecular Biology

“I’ve come to appreciate just how difficult it is to kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the laboratory and in patients. In striving to understand the life and death of this micro-organism I recognized that it can survive in a toxic environment (e.g. drugs) by not responding, adapting aggressively, or sacrificing itself for the remaining survivors. In this respect, perhaps they are not so different from us.” Read biosketch

Medicinal Chemistry

“I consider organic and medicinal chemical research as a puzzle….the challenge of finding a solution to the puzzle is what inspires and drives me. Solving the puzzle in this case will result in the discovery of desperately needed anti-tuberculosis drugs.” Read biosketch

Microbiology/Molecular Biology

“About 18 years ago I was looking for a challenging research project and discovered the mycobacteria. When I started down this challenging path, there was no DNA sequence, new drugs nor vaccines. Many years have passed and although we now have the entire DNA sequence of TB there are still no new drugs available. This most challenging microorganism is fascinating and its successful study requires patience and genuine love for research”. Read biosketch
